Bacalar, in the Grand Costa Maya south of Quintana Roo, is known for its Lagoon of Seven Colours. Its name is believed to come from a Maya word referring to the reeds around the lagoon. The town's historic importance earned it Mexico's Pueblo Mágico designation.
The Spanish settled here in the sixteenth century. Fort San Felipe once defended the town from French and Dutch pirates; today it tells the town's story and offers views across the lagoon.
Discover the magic
Around the fort and main square, restaurants serve regional and international food, with fresh fish and seafood alongside Mexican dishes and tacos. Accommodation ranges from boutique hotels and hostels to lagoon-side bungalows and camping areas.
Much of the town is easy to explore on foot. The road along the southern shore also lends itself to cycling. On the lagoon, swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding and boat trips offer different ways to discover the water and wildlife.
Cenote Negro contrasts with the lagoon's brighter blues. Cenote Azul lies a short distance from the centre. Unlike the cave-like cenotes found elsewhere in the Riviera Maya, these are open-air pools.
